Premium Bird Cage Accessory
Now here is a novel idea, that will not suit everyone, but
if you are the type of person who is interested in the welfare of birds and not
solely making money out of them, this may be the home based business for you.Pet
birds are very popular, especially parrots and parakeets, and they are in huge
demand the world over. Many people will visit pet shops and choose a pet bird
based on its lovely appearance, and take it home hoping that it will turn out
to be a friendly little, low maintenance companion.
What most people don't realise, is that unless the bird has
been at least handled frequently since it was a hatchling, it can be difficult
to get their new friend to bond with them and they may turn out to be afraid of
their new owner, or even worse, a biter.
As someone who offers hand raised birds as pets, this is
where you have the edge. When baby birds are hand fed from a very young age,
they think you are their mother and don't develop the fear of humans in the
same way that parent raised birds do. Hand raised birds are much gentler, and a
lot easier to handle, therefore they make far superior pets than parent raised
birds as they will settle with their new owners much quicker and be far less
stressed.
When people see the difference between parent raised and
hand raised birds, they will almost definitely choose the hand raised one, and
will pay a premium for a friendly, and sociable companion.
How do I go about starting a Hand Raised Bird Business?
There are a couple of different ways you can set yourself up
to run this kind of business, and your decision will most likely be based on
the amount of room you have in your home and backyard, and also your start-up
budget.
If you have lots of room outdoors for aviaries and cages,
and the funds to purchase safe, clean and weatherproof housing for your birds,
then you will probably want to have your own breeding stock and
breed your own baby birds. Species selection is very
important, your choice may depend on how close your neighbours are, as some
birds are much noisier than others. For example, budgerigars are much quieter
and easier to live with than sulphur crested cockatoos. Obviously the aviary
size will also have an impact on your decision, as the smaller species require
a lot less room than their larger counterparts. Note that the aviaries are only
used for breeding purposes, your hatchlings will be housed in the same manner
as detailed below.
If you have a small backyard, or live in an apartment, don't
despair. There are methods to run a successful hand raised bird business
without actually requiring large aviaries to house your birds in. You will need
to have a few cages, which are large enough for your chicks to stretch their
wings and play in. You will be able to house several babies together in these
cages, as they will be spending most of their time out of the cage, most
suitably on a parrot playground or similar.
Ok, so you know how they will be housed, but where are the
chicks actually coming from?
Contact some bird breeders, and ask them if they will sell
you nestlings. You will want babies that are from a few days old to three weeks
old, the age largely depends on the size of the babies, obviously a large chick
will be easier to hand feed than a tiny one. Also, if you can buy a whole
clutch, this is preferable to help with social behaviour. As you are purchasing
the chicks so young, and the breeder hasn't had to supply food or care for
them, you will be able to buy them much cheaper at this age than at the normal
re-homing age.
Some breeders will also offer you the chicks to hand raise,
for a fee. So you don't actually buy the babies, but are paid to raise them,
and then hand them back to the breeder once they are old enough to go to their
new homes. This can be a good way to get started, however keep in mind that you
have no control over who buys the babies, and they may end up in homes that you
would not have approved of if it were your choice.
Where is my market?
You will have many opportunities to find homes for your
babies, hand raised parrots are very popular with demand usually outweighing
supply. This is good news for you, as you will be able to be selective about
who takes your babies home. It also means you can charge a premium over parent
reared chicks, as once people see how endearing and friendly your babies are,
there will be no competition.
